Kiwi, Coconut + Jasmine Green Tea Smoothie

Over coffee on a foggy Northern California morning in mid-December, my friend Nicola asked me to pull together a smoothie recipe focusing on detoxing the body for an e-book she was working on.  Feeling a little sluggish and need of some fine tuning myself, I accepted without hesitation.

Because it’s the largest organ and where the body eliminates one-third of viruses, bacteria and toxins, I decided to focus on ingredients that would benefit the skin.

Full of antioxidants and essential vitamins, this emerald smoothie will provide support to both your digestive system and skin while boosting your immune system and safely flushing those dreaded toxins.

Another perk?  It tastes really great, too.

Ingredients

  • 5 kiwi, peeled and sliced
  •  1 cup brewed jasmine green tea, chilled
  •  1 cup coconut water
  •  1/4 cup orange juice
  •  1 banana
  •  1 tablespoon ground flax seeds
  •  1 tablespoon sunflower seeds
  •  1/2 tablespoon fresh ginger, roughly
  • 1/2 tablespoon raw honey
  •  1/2 tablespoon spirulina
  •  handful of ice

Method

Combine all ingredients in a blender until smooth.

Oo! Spirulina is a new one for me… Where can you buy it? The smoothie sounds amazing. Perfect time of year for an immune system boost, for sure!

I haven’t tried kiwi, tea, or spirulina in a smoothie. One of my gluten reactions is to break out like a teenager. An accidental Christmas glutening has me looking for a way to clear up my skin and recover. This might do the trick. So sorry we didn’t get to meet at Blogher Food. Would have loved to see you and Nicola in your matching outfits.

I’ve never tried spirulina or tea in a smoothie either, this sounds delicious!

Yes, it’s somewhat unique but definitely adds a nice twist. Just to be sure to chill the tea before adding it to the other ingredients.
I hope you also try the spirulina. For so many reasons, it’s one of my very favorite ingredients!

Wow. This is good. Didn’t have all ingredients – made it without spirulina & coconut water, but still amazing.

Many thanks, Nicola. Hope the little guy is feeling much better.
